The Divine Compact
A divine agreement between the Earth Mother and the Mother of Monsters — positive and negative aspects of the same deity — that defines territorial boundaries across Ardentis and governs the conditions under which each aspect may act.
The compact's core provision: the Latan Swamp and adjacent regions are ceded to the Mother of Monsters as her domain. The surrounding lands are preserved for the Earth Mother's peoples. Both aspects are bound not to act outside these boundaries without breach of the compact's terms.
The compact is ancient. Scholars debate whether it predates mortal civilization entirely or whether it was formalized during the early years of the Ardentis calendar. Most theological consensus places it as a pre-settlement arrangement — an agreement that made the continent habitable at all.
The Eltram Precedent
When Prince Eltram led his crusading army into the Temple of Primordial Evil — a structure built within the Mother's ceded territory — he was fighting against the compact's terms. By doing so, his army forfeited its right to leave. Eltram and his entire host were sealed inside the temple alongside Aerom Latan.
If the temple seal breaks completely, the compact is void — and Eltram walks free. So does Aerom Latan. So does every member of Eltram's original host, which has been sealed for over two centuries and has not spent those centuries doing nothing.
The compact voiding also removes the Mother of Monsters' territorial restrictions entirely. She would no longer be bound to the Latan Swamp. The Jungles of the Serpent expanding is the preview. Full compact collapse is something else entirely.
Disruption
In 4716 AR, Iceflame displaced the marsh giants from the Latan Swamp — one of the compact's boundary conditions. The disruption was not accidental. The Mother of Monsters has been expanding her territorial influence ever since. The Jungles of the Serpent moving north is the visible consequence.
