Zoratha — The Eastern Continent

The continent shares its name with the world. The Eastern Kingdoms, who had enough wisdom and prescience to understand the true nature of the world, discovered its name and applied it to themselves. This is also a player-facing reveal connected to the Saphine campaign.

Overview

Zoratha is the great eastern continent — the primary landmass of the world. Its shape resembles a horizontally flipped L. Ardentis is a small island-continent sitting in the negative space inside and around this inverse L. The Dark Sea fills the waters between Ardentis and the continent.

Regions

Eastern Desert Kingdoms (Northern arm of the L)

A traditional society of ancient depth. The Eastern Kingdoms are characterized by:

  • Pharaoh-kings, pyramid architecture, mummy traditions
  • Sophisticated occult knowledge and religious practice
  • A scholarly culture with long institutional memory

These kingdoms are the ones who identified the true name of the world.

Catfolk Caliphates (Southern bend of the L)

Independent city-states of various catfolk peoples, primarily worshipping The Flame. They have mastered survival in the hostile desert through:

  • Shade-generating architecture
  • Underground houses
  • Settlement around oases

They bow to no unified ruler — each caliphate is sovereign. The Flame's teaching of resilience and freedom is not just religion here; it is civic identity.

The Green Sea & Frog Tyrant Territories

Further south, beyond the catfolk lands, a large swamp flanked by mountains opens onto a shallow, murky inland sea — the Green Sea. It is more lake than sea: overgrown with vegetation in places dense enough to swallow ships whole.

The Green Sea is ruled by frog people — a race evolved and shaped by the primordial aberration Gulgothoa, which settled in these waters long ago. The frog peoples are:

  • Hive-minded, with near-psionic mental suppression abilities
  • Organized as savage tribes using stone-age equipment
  • Fiercely territorial and hostile to outsiders

The surrounding waters are filled with beasts, oversized dragonflies, and cursed fairies. Navigation is dangerous even before encountering the frog tribes.

Gulgothoa is not a deity — it is a primordial aberration from the Depths that evolved an entire race. It still inhabits the Green Sea.

The Shadowlands (Southeast)

Barren wastelands at the southern and southeastern extreme of the continent. Decrepit towns are either run by Slavelords or directly subjugated by an order of Shadow Giants. Demonic beasts and shadow creatures are scattered throughout the wilderness.

The Shadowlands are the origin of the exodus that populated Ardentis (~-50 AR) — the civilized peoples fled north across the Dark Sea when shadow giant and dark orc pressure became unsustainable.

Connection to Ardentis

  • The Dark Sea separates Ardentis from the Zoratha continent
  • Dark orcs from the Shadowlands are currently staging through Lighthouse Island (4724–4725 AR)
  • The Slavelords operating on Ardentis's eastern shores have roots in the Shadowlands power structure
