The South

Overview

The southern lands of Ardentis were once united under the Ulek Empire — a civilization over 4,000 years old, founded by human settlers who crossed the Dark Sea fleeing the Shadowlands. In 4724, this empire exists only in name and fragments. Three successor factions now divide the territory, none holding full legitimacy. Meanwhile, the Dark Sea to the south stirs with ancient evil, and Lighthouse Island is about to become a staging ground for something far worse than political decay.

Political Divisions

The Ulek Empire (Usurper)

A small rump state centered around Sandstone Harbor, ruled by Emperor Theodor Crane — a corrupt noble descended from a family of wealthy army suppliers. Crane forced the Church of the Keymaster in Sandstone to crown him emperor, granting a veneer of religious legitimacy to what is essentially a power grab. Emphasis: production, taxes, conscription. He holds influence up to Prince Eltram Landing but has not dared attempt to conquer it.

The Kingdom of Ulek

The most legitimate of the successor states, with Prince Eltram Landing as its capital. Holds the moral authority of Prince Eltram's legacy. Currently in a fragile position — its founding hero is sealed forever in the Temple of Primordial Evil.

The Free Cities of Ulek

A loose grouping of cities from Ulex City north toward Nordwall, each operating as an autonomous silo. The intent was rational self-governance after the empire's fall. The result has been exploitation: nobles and generals hoarding wealth, fake "authorities" appearing like mushrooms to collect taxes in the name of the church or the former empire, and trade grinding down. Nordwall has recently declared full independence from even this grouping, under Mayor Lyriana Valeris.

Key Locations

Ulex City

The nominal capital of the Free Cities of Ulek. A city that recognized the empire's end and tried to respond with pragmatic federalism — but the result has been a vacuum filled by opportunists. Still significant in size and history, but hollowed out.

Prince Eltram Landing

Capital of the Kingdom of Ulek and one of the most storied cities on the continent. Founded approximately 250 years ago when the Last King Ulek, struck by a shadow-cursed arrow on a voyage south of the Dark Sea, barely survived the return journey. He arrived at a tiny, nameless port town, where his companion — Lady Annabelle, a cleric of the Keymaster promised to chastity who had broken her vow for love — gave birth to Prince Eltram Ulek. The king died witnessing his son's birth.

The town grew rapidly as the news spread. Within 40 years it was one of the most important cities in the region. After Prince Eltram was lost — sealed in the Temple of Primordial Evil near Xas — Lady Annabelle became High Priestess of the Keymaster in Ulex City, overseeing coronation rituals and maintaining the last shreds of imperial legitimacy. Her death marked the true end of the Ulek Empire after 4,000+ years.

Sandstone Harbor

Capital of the usurper Ulek Empire under Theodor Crane. A production-focused city with a strong agricultural base — the Crane family's origin as army suppliers shaped the city's priorities. Heavy on taxes and conscription, light on culture or freedom.

Lighthouse Island

A small island off the southwestern coast, primarily functioning as a navigation waypoint for ships crossing toward the Dark Sea. Strategically positioned.

Warning (current, 4724–4725): Lighthouse Island will be the first landing point for an incoming wave of dark orcs from the Shadowlands. The usurper Ulek Empire — and the entire south — is wholly unprepared for this.

The Dark Sea

The body of water separating Ardentis from the Shadowlands (also called the Farlands). The Dark Sea is the domain of The Depths Beyond — the negative aspect of The Flame. It is home to deep-sea monsters, permanent storms, and creeping darkness.

The original human and dwarven settlers crossed the Dark Sea fleeing Noria, Lady of Darkness, and her shadow giants. The Last King Ulek attempted a return voyage 250 years ago — what should have been a 90-day trip became a 200-day nightmare as the sea's unholy forces turned against his fleet. Only one ship survived.

The Farlands (labeled on the southeastern map edge) are another name for the Shadowlands — this is unknown to the native humanoids of Ardentis and the eastern desert kingdoms.
